Meeting between U.S President and Myanmar Leaders

In Naypyitaw, the capital of Myanmar, President Obama convened with 13 members of parliament (MPs) representing various parties and both houses to deliberate on the country’s democratic advancements. The gathering was facilitated by NDI’s Parliamentary Resource Center, with backing from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

Among the attendees were Thura U Shwe Mann, speaker of the Pyithu Hluttaw (lower house) and the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (Union parliament), as well as U Khin Aung Myint, speaker of the Amyotha Hluttaw (upper house), both from the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP). Additionally, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, chair of the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD), along with MPs from USDP, NLD, Chin Progressive Party (CPP), Shan National Democratic Party (SNDP), and the All Mon Democratic Party (AMDP) were present.
